Shelties - Ottawa & Area

Been awhile since I last posted since we moved 4 years ago.  I no longer maintain our website.

I do however get regular requests for puppies, if not from folks wanting ones our old lines, then the names of kennels I know in my area.

My first suggested resource for Ontario in general is to go to the CSSA site https://www.canadianshelties.ca/ and contact the various directors for member referrals.

The local CKC breeders are

Laureate - Kim Aston

Divine - Linda Labelle

Kendale - Diane Biggar

Dury Voe - Judy Kelsey

Valley Gem - Bonnie Bird-Pappel

Velvetfog - Anne Brazeau

TLC - Tina King

Sharrow- Margaret Pratt (local resource for rescues)

All have websites, and are on Facebook either by name and/or kennel name.

A little update on me.  I’ve spent more time being able to work at agility with our ‘Ruffles’,  Shelamo Walk On Bi.  Covid has provided me with the time and ability to enjoy this outdoor sport with several classmates.  We’ve obtained 2 Q’s towards our starters jumpers. My first ever agility Q’s!

I was also able to teach Ruffles A bit of water safety, pool entry, and blowing bubbles while bobbing for treats thanks to Linda’s pool and the hot summer days

I’ve helped breed and whelp two litters this spring, enjoyed outdoor socializing them, and doing puppy pics.

I’ve still been teaching dog obedience with the City of Ottawa however the fall course has now been cancelled due to moving back to a modified stage 2.  Here’s hoping we can reduce our covid numbers for a winter 2021 session.

Stay safe.  Teach your dog something new that you can use in everyday life.

As I wrote on Kate Freeman's Facebook page ...

It saddens us deeply to hear that the boy that stole my heart from early on as a promising show dog, now leaves a big hole in so many people's hearts. He has done so much for the sheltie world, as a great ambassador in so many venues. He had a heart bigger than the 'space' that we could give him, and altho it took some 4 years for him to land in the right hands, it couldn't have been a better match with Kate - thank you Linda Howie for your perseverance in getting Kate to come and see him! I could add too, so many stories of his antics - how he figured out how to get onto the table and gobble up the butter; finished off Mike's steak dinner one night, but amazingly left mine! Good BOY! Figured out how to go from a chair, onto a desk, then over the 4' xpen, and down onto the puppy crate, to the floor, to eat a litter of pup's meal! Took me awhile to figure out just how he was standing in the puppy pen, asking to be let out. His excitement to see my mom one day, caused us to have to make a trip to the emerg to have the skin on her shin sown up. Oh Panda, the stories, the fun, the zest for life that you instilled in so many of us, the smiles you put on one judge's face as a Senior Puppy in the show ring, and on children's faces ... the memories will live on with so many of us for a very long time. Kate, may you know I couldn't have asked for a better home to work with this 'brat' and that I will cry with you for awhile. I am SO glad I was able to see him in May. He was a once in a life time dog. You came into the world living through the Great Ice Storm of January 1998, and have left on a Rainbow. Panda you are now free to play in the fields. Pls say hi to the Shelamo gang that has left before you. Hugs Kate.

Heart Breaking Losses

It is with a heavy heart that I have a few losses to talk about.

Back in early January one of our dedicated Shelamo clients, Judy Flanigan, had to say good bye to their "Truffles" after a year long battle of illness that did not see resolutions as much as was tried.

Then on May 21 their "Amber" at 13+ yrs of age, without much warning, became seriously ill, although treatment was tried, she was fading before them to which another hard decision had to be made.

Judy's dedication to these two girls was more than one could ask.  Her work with "Amber" to obtain obedience and rally titles after we retired her was more than we could have asked.

We send our condolences to the whole Flanigan family.

"Amber" and "Truffles" were 1/2 sisters out of our Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC.

Tribute To A Very Thoughtul Man

I have been slow in blogging this as it's taken time to put the various pieces together.

It was mid November 2012, that a kind gentleman passed peacefully in his home with his beloved and faithful sheltie "Annie" by his side.  His life was rich in so many ways - golfing, loved Irish music, playing his tin-whistle, and enjoying, even on his last day reading at the local library with "Annie" by his side.

Rod with "Annie" last year
Rod had made several wishes clear, with one being, should he predecease his beloved girl "Annie", she was to be returned to the kennel he got her from.  We can't thank Rod enough for having that foresight and making his wishes clear.  We also thank those that cared for "Annie" during the few days until Rod's Executor was able to arrive and follow-up with finding us, as we'd moved since he'd had her (Kathy and Heather, thank-you).
Laureate L'Anais, 2005
"Annie" is known as Laureate L'Anais, and she came to us in 2001 on a co-ownership with the owner's of Laureate Kennels, Kim Aston and Peter Culumovic.  She lived most of her time with us, producing several litters, until her retirement, when Rod came to us in June of 2005 looking for another sheltie to live and enjoy his life with.

"Annie's" contribution to the sheltie world has proved significant.  Here is a list of some of her kids and decedents, with many more that have contributed to kennels around the world and graced the couches of others.

"Annie" and her girlie friends watching me shovel with the 1st snow fall
"Annie" with the seniors supervising the 2nd snow fall

"Annie" has now been to the vet and as with most seniors this age is experiencing some medical issues.  We know for one her hearing has gone.  We (and Laureate) are dealing with them one at a time as we sort out her problems.

We thank those that have donated in Rod's name to date, for "Annie's" alma mater, for her continued care.  Please know the Executor will be kept informed.

We thank you Rod for all you have given to your love of shelties, and embraced the life you lived.

With this experience, I hope all of you with fur kids will be encouraged to make provisions for them.

More Titles - Indie & Travis

More titles for our Shelamo Dogs!

Owners Chantelle & Eric hare having a blast with these two boys.

"Travis" did so well in his Herding Instincts test in April the evaluator recommended they pursue the sport.  He's now a Therapy Dog and the goal is to work in the community.

And then there's the younger boy "Indie"who turns 2 today!  Happy Birthday!

Shelamo Code Name Spitfire ADC SGDC

In just 4 trials he earned both his Starters titles in agility,  They say his learning ability is just stunning, shaping behaviours in under 5 minutes.  He's done a "Canine Nosework" class and did so well that they've started a Tracking class.  He's also working in obedience with the goal of getting ready to enter Rally O and Obedience trials.

WOW!  Just makes me tired thinking about all this guy (and owner) do!  Sure not a dull moment :)

His CKC name couldn't have suited him more!

A Naming Game - Tic, Tac and now, Toe

Long time sheltie clients of ours have now completed their next generation of agility stars. Their interest in agility started back in 1997 when they purchased their 1st sheltie from us, Shelamo English Rose (and yes, as her name implies, she left with them the day Lady Di passed away).

Their 2nd sheltie from us is "Tic", she's a small tri girl, that is just eating up the agility rings.

"Tic" and owner Jack in 2009

"Tac" their 2nd dog is a Papillion.

And now, they've completed their naming game with "Toe". He was over to have his ears redone, so I took the opportunity to capture a few shots of him. He's just coming up 16 wks.

He is sired by our BPIS Ch Shelamo's Riding The Sky HIC (who is also working in agility with owner Linda Howie) out of our girl Ch Shelamo That's Amore.

We're hoping he follows in his father's paw prints.

Gryphon Wins BIG

Huge CONGRATS to Linda Howie and her boy Gryphon. On May 19th, he achieved his Expert Standard Bronze Agility title, also earning him his VBA, or Bronze Versatility Award. Now I'm not up on all the requirements for these titles, but am told that for the 1st one the dog has to have 10 Q's in the master standard runs, and for the VBA needs 10 master standard runs & 25 master games ... that's a lot of running in my opinion! And he did it in the semi-dark.

Speedy Shaymus & Our Other Agility Stars

I swear there are several of our clients doing agility with their dogs that are going to have to organize a human agility exercise program, just to keep in tip top shape to keep up with their speedy agility dogs.

Lynn reports that Shaymus has increased his speed phenomenally with their new trainer and it's getting harder for her to keep up with him. Here are the recent photos she's sent me.

look at that tight turn after the tire

flying over the bar jump

Lynn says ... "He now has his Advanced AAC Games title, his Intermediate CKC Standard and Jumpers with Weaves Title and one leg of his Excellent Jumpers With Weaves in CKC with a first place. He needs one more Standard Q in AAC to be in Masters everything. He is a really fun Steeplechaser too."

I guess they get added to these ones too!

Shelamo Sassy Squirt NAFA Ch-FDX, UFLI TF111, CKC NS, CKC NJW, CKC IS, AAC SS, AAC SG, HIT

I'm having problems keeping track of every one's titles, they are racking up so quickly ...

Kate is doing well with her new girl Tula, and her Panda still can show the young ones at 13+ yrs of age how it's done, plus she's considering entering him in the Novice C division of obedience trials this summer just for the fun of it.

Linda is going strong with ATCH Gryphon (he's featured in the recent issue of Sheltie Pacesetter), plus he just added 2 more 1st place & Best Runs earning his Master Steeplechase Dog of Canada Title. He needs 3 more standard runs to get his Bronze Award of Merit, and BPIS Ch Whistler (a Travis brother) is tearing up the course in his training.

Chantelle is working hard with both her Travis (sister to our Ch Chinook), and new boy Indie.

Jack has his spiked shoes on, as his girl Tic is keeping his heart rate up with her speed.

Spring Obedience Classes

March break is almost over, time to think about getting your dog registered & out to some obedience classes, especially if you have a puppy. It really is an enjoyable, one on one time with you and your dog. They learn it's their special night out, they are going to see their pack of friends and learn something that pleases you.

You learn consistency, for without that in your day to day life with your dog .... well, for some your neighbours may not be too pleased, nor that owner & their dog you run into at the doggie park. Make some time ... your dog will love you for it!

These are my winter Level 2/3 students on their final night @ the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Center in the City of Ottawa.

You can also consider doing agility or even flyball depending on what your dog is inclined to do.

If you need inspiration and live in the Toronto area, this weekend (Wed-Sun) there is the All Star Dog Show sponsored by Purina where there are demos of everything from agility & flyball, dock diving, a Rare Breed Dog show and Dogs with Jobs ... now how cool is that?! Wish I lived closer as I'd be going.

New Titled Dog For Shelamo

Can't wait to find out an answer .... you'll read it at the end ... in the meantime just had to post this ...

This past weekend a Shelamo bred dog obtained his Agility Trial Champion of Canada. This is the 1st one of our breeding to obtain this recognition.

He is none other than .... drum roll please ...... now ...

AtCHC Shelamo's Highland Eagle ADC RN-MCL, RA-MCL, AGN, AGDC, ADDC, AGN, AGI, SMADC, SMTRDC

(DC/Cdn Ch Linden Danbie The Blacksmith NA VCX HTDI x Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC )

(l-r Linda Howie, Gryphon, judge)

Linda Howie tells me that in Canada only a ribbon is given out for this title, however in the US you do a victory lap taking the pole of the last jump and having people sign it. Well Linda broke Canadian tradition, bought her own jump pole, did her victory lap and had everyone sign it.

Maybe the tradition will catch on here now!

Linda has spent hours training Gryphon to get to this prestigious title, he's been a great dog to work with and taught her many things about agility training & competition.

What we don't know yet is whether some of those titles at the end of his name get removed as they go towards his AtCHC.

In her words ...

"He's been waiting for years for me to catch up."

And we can't forget her next star in training is her newest Canadian Best Puppy In Show Ch Shelamo's Riding The Sky, who just happens to be a Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC great grandson.

It's also noteworthy that Gryphon's sire was the 1st Sheltie Duel Champion in the USA, bred and trained by Dr. Sherry Lee, Linden Shelties FLA. Sherry's been a special friend for many years, the best of which she piloted our BPIS Am/Cdn "Rocky" to his American Championship.

More Shelamo Wins - Agility

Well the emails keep coming in from clients who had successes from this past weekend.

Jack (& Pauline the sideline observer) of Kemptville competed in the Ontario Regional Agility competition with their little tri girl Tic and they qualified with 389 points in the 10" Specials class and are now headed to Calgary for the AAC Nationals the beginning of August. I'm envious, as it will be held at Spruce Meadows, a place I've always wanted to go and watch the horse jumping competitions. Come home with some pics Jack & Pauline!

Here's Tic from last yrs competition here @ our National Equestrian Park. She just RIPS up the course!

This means in one weekend our Shelamo dogs competed in, and came away with super awards in Conformation, Herding, Rally O, and Agility! I'd say we have versatile dogs and VERY dedicated versatile owners .... huge congrats to everyone!

A Great Mother's Day Weekend

Two Shelamo dogs, owned by Linda Howie made for a great Mother's Day weekend with their wins. Her young boy, Shelamo's Riding the Sky (Am/Cdn Ch Playland Dallas Cowboy x Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends) went with us to the Arnprior Dog Show taking WD & BOS both days entered, and a BOW on Sunday. While "Whistler" was off strutting his stuff, Linda was racing around an agility field with her Shelamo's Highland Eagle ADC RN-MCL, RA-MCL, AGN, AGDC, ADDC,AGN, AGI, SMADC, SMTRDC, "Gryphon". He had qualifying runs, with a 1st place and best run in both his Masters Jumpers and Steeplechase.

Linda sent me this picture of her two boys smiling for the camera :)
