Almost a Year Ago - An Awesome Birthday Present

Remembering, this past weekend BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector left his mark on our world, and through him, his daughter MBPIB Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends.

Little did I know how events would come full circle last year.

Back around 1980 my parents would travel to one of our local towns, Almonte, on their Honda Gold Wing 1000 and would visit the Dodd's antique shop.  Dad tried to buy an antique clock from Kevin, as a young boy, but no way!  Through the years they watched him come into his own as an acclaimed artist.

All of the personal stories mom and dad would tell, I really wasn't aware of the connection they had had with him for so many years.  Just knew who he was by some of the paintings we had at home, and the one my mom bought me years ago with a tri sheltie in it, called "Heading Home".

It was in the late fall of 2011 that I went with friends and my mom to a local Christmas Craft fair, and time was spent chatting with Kevin at his booth (mostly mom catching up on their lives).  There was a painting he had there that he indicated he was working on, and he wanted a moving sheltie in it.  Well ....little did he know then that he was talking to a breeder of shelties!  So I offered to find a few of my shelties on the move for him to work with.

After a long waiting period for me, he finished one of his more intricate paintings in the fall of 2013.

Mom and I met up with him at the Carp Fair in Sept 2013.  There he had the original painting!  It wasn't until this point that the connection of me (my business card had my married name) being the daughter set in.

What ended up happening ? ..... the original is now proudly displayed in our home.

This is picture he choose to use.

In Memoriam - BPIS Am/Cdn Shelamo's Prospector

It has taken me a bit to compose this .....
January 30, 2000 - September 1, 2013

It was with a heavy heart that my dear "Rock Man" passed in my arms, at home in the wee hours of September 1, 2013.  Both Mike and my mom were here by his side.

He was born into litter of 6 on January 30, 2000 (3 would become Ch's), and little did we know how full he would make our lives.  From the beginning he was my heart dog, always being by my side, watching my every move, and becoming the face of Shelamo kennels from that point forward.
"Rocky" is on the left
He was our Ambassador for our breed here, taking up residency on any new client's lap without asking questions!

There were so many 1st accomplishments he did for us here @ Shelamo .... so many hearts he touched along the way.

So this is where we part, My Friend,
And you'll run on, around the bend.
Gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on; I'll find the strength,
Life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
Share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
But they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
Will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
Take with you this...I loved you best.

-Jim Willis

A tribute will be done in two weeks on Sheltie Strut.

Thank-you to the vets, Mark & Amanda, now at the Mississippi Animal Hospital for being there from the beginning of his life to the end.
You are sadly missed by Mike and I, dear Bud.  There will be a day we can play again.

Tribute To A Very Thoughtul Man

I have been slow in blogging this as it's taken time to put the various pieces together.

It was mid November 2012, that a kind gentleman passed peacefully in his home with his beloved and faithful sheltie "Annie" by his side.  His life was rich in so many ways - golfing, loved Irish music, playing his tin-whistle, and enjoying, even on his last day reading at the local library with "Annie" by his side.

Rod with "Annie" last year
Rod had made several wishes clear, with one being, should he predecease his beloved girl "Annie", she was to be returned to the kennel he got her from.  We can't thank Rod enough for having that foresight and making his wishes clear.  We also thank those that cared for "Annie" during the few days until Rod's Executor was able to arrive and follow-up with finding us, as we'd moved since he'd had her (Kathy and Heather, thank-you).
Laureate L'Anais, 2005
"Annie" is known as Laureate L'Anais, and she came to us in 2001 on a co-ownership with the owner's of Laureate Kennels, Kim Aston and Peter Culumovic.  She lived most of her time with us, producing several litters, until her retirement, when Rod came to us in June of 2005 looking for another sheltie to live and enjoy his life with.

"Annie's" contribution to the sheltie world has proved significant.  Here is a list of some of her kids and decedents, with many more that have contributed to kennels around the world and graced the couches of others.

"Annie" has now been to the vet and as with most seniors this age is experiencing some medical issues.  We know for one her hearing has gone.  We (and Laureate) are dealing with them one at a time as we sort out her problems.

We thank those that have donated in Rod's name to date, for "Annie's" alma mater, for her continued care.  Please know the Executor will be kept informed.

We thank you Rod for all you have given to your love of shelties, and embraced the life you lived.

With this experience, I hope all of you with fur kids will be encouraged to make provisions for them.

OKC Show - Yoyo and Cocoa Do Us Proud

We attended the OKC show here in Ottawa this past weekend, after a hiatus this summer.  There are some new competitions, one being a Baby Puppy (pups 3-6 months of age), and a Bred By Exhibitor Competition (must be the breeder and the handler).

On the Friday we showed our baby puppy "Yoyo", and all three days in the classes our "Cocoa", and were proud at how they did.

CSSA National 2012

We had the pleasure of attending our CSSA National 2012 in Ancaster, Ontario this past week and we were very pleased with the placement of our dogs.

The first to be shown was our Shelamo A Moment of Tyme in the Junior Puppy Class.  This was her 1st show at just over 6 mths of age and was awarded 2nd place in a competitive class.  This was a special win, a special moment, as I'm sure her dam Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends whom we had to say good-bye to in January was looking down.

We had so many ring side comments on this girl, I thank you.

Then it was our Shelamo She's Got Moxi's turn in the Open Black class where Kim Wendling stepped in for me. Here are some candid photos I was able to take.
"Moxi" in the line up - Hi there judge, what ya got?!
Coming at ya ...
is that chicken for me?!  I'm baiting Kim!
"Moxi" wins her class!
And not least in Specials our Ch Shelamo Riding The Wind made the 1st cut in the bitches.  She's also a Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends daughter.

At the very end of the National, there are various Parades, one being the Veterans which I do believe there needs to be tissue boxes put out around the ring.  I had the honour of show casing Ch Shelamo's Sure Fire CGN, CD, RE for owner Judy Flanigan.  "Amber's" brother BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector was also to be exhibited, however we didn't have enough room to bring him with us.  Thanks to Evelyn Susin for taking this lovely shot of the two of us.  Judy you should be so proud of the accomplishments you put on the end of her name especially her #22 sheltie 2011 Rally ranking with her at 11.5 yrs of age.
There was one other sheltie there - it did forget to read our standard tho:).  Linda James & her husband of Ravenscourt sheltie did an awesome job of this sheltie topiary that was front and center at the show.  It went up for auction which raised a lot of money for the National, I'm just not sure what size of crate it needed to get home!  Just might have to invite Linda & her husband here for a week to make one for us:)

Great week, enjoyed seeing some very lovely dogs, (believe I found a great mate for "Moxi") friends in shelties that come from afar that we only see every few years, and a congrats to the host club for putting on a well run event.

Never Easy Saying Good Bye

"Tyme"
Dec 6, 2006 - January 26, 2012

It is with great sadness that we had to send our Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends, at such a young age, across the Rainbow Bridge.

In less than 5 days she went from a happy girl, pushing her food away for later, then with a bit it coming back up later, to yesterday interested but refusing food and a bit out of sorts. There were no other outward signs. Blood test were insignificant, xrays & ultrasound showed a light mass which the thought was maybe ovarian issues. Her litter of pups was almost 14 wks ago.

Surgery was scheduled for today, which we found a large mass cell tumor attached to her upper intestines & pancreas. There was also another one near the spine. No way was surgical removal possible and prognosis for any treatment was grave at best.

Hard as it was we didn't wake her up.

She leaves behind a great legacy ...
