Over my year of breeding it is interesting the names people come up with for their dogs.

One of the best ones I heard of, years ago, was a sheltie rescue I took in - his name was "Sheltie"!  It really didn't have a meaning for me other than the lack of imagination, (the kids named him) and that likely the sheltie was just a dog for the kids with no consideration for teaching their kids about dogs in general.

Breeding Dogs - Ups and Downs

The last two weeks, since June 25th, here at Shelamo have been very hard on us and has required many vet trips.

The wicked heat we've been through, breaking daily temps, has also worn us and the dogs out.  Just hoping our annuals, potted tomatoes and other gardens we're watering enough to sustain them.

  

Our Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC, at over 14 yrs of age, became ill and after 2 days of intensive IV fluid care and testing we found she's in stage 2 kidney failure. New food, meds and religious monitor has had to be upped to keep her stable.  She's doing well at this point, just means a lot of extra care.

Then, a bit earlier than expected on July 2nd, our Ch Shelamo Riding The Wind delivered two pups, unfortunately we lost one.  She's given us a real run for our money with just one!  She's one of the VERY few girls we have that wants to carry her pup around & move it to a different location from our standard whelping area of our kitchen.  I couldn't even leave for a minute without finding she was on the move again!  I was always asking - please give me your puppy!  With monitoring her, it meant sleeping on the couch for two days to ensure we got through the night OK.

She's had not wanted to eat well postpartum, so my stock of goodies, cooking up special meals has been endless, with a counter full of food, mostly that she hasn't wanted.  Her milk wasn't coming in well either, so I was supplementing the pup's feeding to try and maintain her birth weight, and then to gain some.  Trying to draw a fine line so that she'd at least nurse to try and cause the milk to come down hasn't been easy.  I think now, thanks to a Facebook neonatal page I'm on, I've found a natural remedy that I picked up this Friday that seems to have helped.  We're just 24 hours into it, so we'll see, but he pup now seems to have a fully belly when I check her and has put on weight.

Needless to say Chinook is a very attentive mom ... too much so!

She's gotten the nick-name of YoYo!

Rest Well Dear - Ch Shelamo Burleigh Casino Rama CGN, CD

July 2nd brought concerning issues with our 12 yr old Casino.  She had been treated for a UVitis in her left eye for just over a year and all seemed to be OK.  However, serious signs, especially a nose bleed, meant a rush into our vets.  She was put on antibiotics in hopes that we were just facing an infection.

The week seemed to go slowly in waiting to get back to see the eye specialist on Thursday.  Although he couldn't find her UVitis was any more serious, he was very suspicious of something else going on behind the eye, which a tumour was highly suspected.  So, we got a quote for a CTscan and what could come of it to consider over the weekend and an appointment for next Wednesday if we wanted it done.

However, that wouldn't be the case.  Friday afternoon she seemed way worse and less responsive to people she enjoyed being around, she just wanted to sleep.  She refused her pill pocket meds which was not like her, a definite sign of trouble.  There was also more nose bleeding, and her ability to take in air seemed more restricted.  She also seemed very painful to the touch in that area if I tried to clean that side of her face.  I settled her down in the kitchen with blankets and supported her head with more so she'd be as comfortable as possible for the night.

Saturday morning I called our vet for an appointment as it seemed to be 'time'.  The vets tried a few procedures with her 'under' to determine if it might be a large infection or indeed the suspect of cancer was there.

Although they were not conclusive, a bit of what they did see told them it wasn't good.  We left her with no more pain, and said our good-byes.

She will be remembered as a teaching assistant at my dog classes, loved when she did Brownie demos, an attraction at the local market, and just a fun loving girl with a heart of gold that would do the best she could at any time.  She was a Champion by all means.

To Dr Sherry Lee of FLA for entertaining her for a year; to Cheryl Pike who handled her in the Breed ring after I took Winners Female, and then had "Rocky" as a Special, under respected breeder judge Tom Coen, finishing her Canadian Championship with Best of Winners. In one of the few shows we specialized her in, to respected breeder judge Denise Cornelsson for awarding her a Group 2nd.

 Casino went to live with Mary-Anne for a good year and a half and between them they achieved their CGN at Camp Dog Wood, and then their Companion Dog title

Bum rubs, and field running were two of her favorite past times.

 Winter & summer sunny days were also high on her list of LOVES!

It's HOT out there!

Did you Know?

Car windows act to both absorb the sun's rays and insulate your vehicle:  The inside of a car can heat up to 110 degrees F in only 10 minutes on an 80 deg. day (29C) - and we went over that this past week, setting a high temperature record.

Translate that into our Canadian Celsius Temps

75 = 23 C
85 = 29 C
100 =  almost 40 C
140 = 60 C!!!

The normal dog's body temp is around 101.5 F, or 38.6 C.  Around 105F your pet is at risk for developing heat exhaustion.  If the body temperature rises to 107, your pet has entered the critical zone of heat stroke, with possible irreversible damage and death.

Did you know - a dog sweats from its paws and mouth?  not its skin?

Cooling your dog down on hot days -

have cool, not cold water available
spray dog's pads with water (Oh, and if long haired breed, please trim those pad hairs)
keep your dog in a shaded area - especially black dogs and those with the shorter noses (bulldogs, pekes, Lhasas, Shih Tzus) should really be kept in air conditioned environments.
placing ice to head and neck can help lower a dog's temperature
place a cool wet cloth in the groin area of your dog


if your dog gets over heated - signs to watch for

your dog's tongue will get longer and wider - that is how they increase the surface area to get cooler; rapid panting, bright red tongue, red or pale gums, thick, sticky saliva ...
and then into weak/dizzy, vomiting/shock state

these last states you want to seek vet assistance asap

So, especially if you're travelling with your pet, just be cognitive of where you are/going, what you are planning to do, and where you might find the nearest vet hospital.

TICKS - are increasing BIG time in the Ottawa Area

TICKS in the Ottawa area - as posted by vet, Saye Clement on Facebook - "send out the word about ticks being bad this year. Warm winter combined with lots of deer and lots of wild turkeys (who knew!), and ground hogs, will likely lead to huge numbers of ticks on dogs (and people!). If people find ticks, have them email me a photo at the office. Thanks!!"  This vet is at the Carling Animal Hospital in Ottawa.  She is doing an informal study of ticks in this area. She's asking that you do one of two things; take a picture and email it to her (if you plan on having your vet send it off for Lyme testing), or if not, put it in a leak proof bottle with some rubbing alcohol and send it/drop it off to her.

There are two great tick removal tools.  One is sold at Lee Valley Tools called a Tick Key, the other is a Tick Twister.

So far this year in grooming dogs, I've found one earlier than normal.  Last year a client's dog got one in a city park/green space area in the west/sound end of Ottawa.


The Ottawa Health site advises what to do for yourself, but my concern in writing this is for our animals.  Stay out of long grass, keep to trails, and check your dog well for ticks.  Their favorite spots tend to be around the head/ears, neck, chest.  All because the dog is usually nosing down in the grass :)  However feel/check everywhere.  Consider talking to your vet about the various preventative meds available for this time of year too.


And don't forget your cats if you let them out.

Have You Moved? Are You Moving?

Something to Remember!

There are so many things to consider when moving - the big one is address/phone # changes.  How many of you remember your dog's contact info?  If your dog is CKC registered, you should give them a call and update your contact info.  If your dog is microchipped through a company like Avid via your vet, then you should call them.

If the tattoo is readable they will contact the CKC and try and get your contact info; the same goes for reading the microchip.  But, if the info is incorrect (nor have you notified your breeder) then it becomes so much harder to reunite you with your pet.

I know for us, since all our microchips are bought through the CKC they are all thus registered to us as a contact.  So we can be the one they reach when all else fails.

Kids and Dogs

Just common sense.  The biggest one I tell my customers with kids is the crate one.  That is their safe place, always!  Small children usually need help in keeping feet 'quiet' and using their 'inside voice'.

I've read, and have heard of at least 2 shelties that the diagnosis of autoimmune hemolytic anemia, occurred not long after vaccine boosters at middle age.  More and more research seems to be pointing us in the direction of over vaccination, which specifically has resulted in the Canine Rabies Challenge Fund.

Education on your pet's health is the first step.  I'm no expert, just always learning.  Science is moving at such a fast pace these days.

Also, for those of you in the Ottawa area, I can tell you there has already been an increase in the number of ticks found on dogs.  So if you're out in the woods, or even long grass don't forget to do a constant check on your dog.  Ticks can especially be found around the neck, ears, face and belly.  I understand right now that there is a 4 week backlog in getting the tick you find on your dog analyzed due to the high volume being seen.

More Titles - Indie & Travis

"Travis" did so well in his Herding Instincts test in April the evaluator recommended they pursue the sport.  He's now a Therapy Dog and the goal is to work in the community.

In just 4 trials he earned both his Starters titles in agility,  They say his learning ability is just stunning, shaping behaviours in under 5 minutes.  He's done a "Canine Nosework" class and did so well that they've started a Tracking class.  He's also working in obedience with the goal of getting ready to enter Rally O and Obedience trials.

WOW!  Just makes me tired thinking about all this guy (and owner) do!  Sure not a dull moment :)

We're celebrating another birthday!  "Opal" turns 14 today (dob May 21, 1998).  A reminder of how time flies, and how much we've accomplished through her.  We are now working on 5 generations deep through her kids.

The newest ones are MBPIS BPISS Ch Shelamo Flash Forward, and our 6 month old Shelamo A Moment Of Tyme that just placed 2nd in her Jr Puppy Class at our CSSA National last week.

She's now deaf, has scared more than one person trying to wake her when she's been in a deep sleep, however is more than wide awake when food is present!  Needless to say, "Opal's" past time is to be a mini vacuum, checking crates for left overs and making a tour of the kitchen floor & table area to see if Mike just happened to drop any tidbits when cooking meals.  She's got a good right paw 'hook' too, if you don't pay enough attention to her.

She has been the best whelper and mother to the pups she's raised; couldn't have asked for anything better.  She made our lives raising her pups so easy.  She is what we breeder's call an 'easy keeper'.

Our resident blue eye'd beauty turns 12 years old today (May 20/2000).  She is pictured with "Rocky" BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector who turned 12 this past January.  Her best love is hanging out with Mike in his chair and getting tummy rubs.  She continues to go with me as a demo dog for the  obedience classes I teach.

Shelamo Linden Decoration is a litter sister to our "Opal" Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC which is "Rocky's" dam.

"Karma" and Alexa - new Rally Title

We're pleased to hear that Shelamo Making Spirits Brite (Ch Fairfax Hallmark x Shelamo Tia Maria) obtained her Rally Novice title this past weekend.  She had 3 1st placements and 1 2nd.  Alexa and "Karma" are working on their Rally Advanced and are in agility too.

She has matured into such a lovely girl!  Congrats ladies on a job well done.

CSSA National 2012

We had the pleasure of attending our CSSA National 2012 in Ancaster, Ontario this past week and we were very pleased with the placement of our dogs.

The first to be shown was our Shelamo A Moment of Tyme in the Junior Puppy Class.  This was her 1st show at just over 6 mths of age and was awarded 2nd place in a competitive class.  This was a special win, a special moment, as I'm sure her dam Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends whom we had to say good-bye to in January was looking down.

We had so many ring side comments on this girl, I thank you.

Then it was our Shelamo She's Got Moxi's turn in the Open Black class where Kim Wendling stepped in for me. Here are some candid photos I was able to take.

 And not least in Specials our Ch Shelamo Riding The Wind made the 1st cut in the bitches.  She's also a Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends daughter.

At the very end of the National, there are various Parades, one being the Veterans which I do believe there needs to be tissue boxes put out around the ring.  I had the honour of show casing Ch Shelamo's Sure Fire CGN, CD, RE for owner Judy Flanigan.  "Amber's" brother BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector was also to be exhibited, however we didn't have enough room to bring him with us.  Thanks to Evelyn Susin for taking this lovely shot of the two of us.  Judy you should be so proud of the accomplishments you put on the end of her name especially her #22 sheltie 2011 Rally ranking with her at 11.5 yrs of age.

There was one other sheltie there - it did forget to read our standard tho:).  Linda James & her husband of Ravenscourt sheltie did an awesome job of this sheltie topiary that was front and center at the show.  It went up for auction which raised a lot of money for the National, I'm just not sure what size of crate it needed to get home!  Just might have to invite Linda & her husband here for a week to make one for us:)

Great week, enjoyed seeing some very lovely dogs, (believe I found a great mate for "Moxi") friends in shelties that come from afar that we only see every few years, and a congrats to the host club for putting on a well run event.
