Just common sense. The biggest one I tell my customers with kids is the crate one. That is their safe place, always! Small children usually need help in keeping feet 'quiet' and using their 'inside voice'.
Children should always be supervised when around any dog.
That's a great graphic...and one that some adults could learn from too!
Have you ever seen "Pick a Puppy"? It's a Canadian show that follows a family to three breeders as they select a dog.
The thing that drives me crazy about every episode is how wired the kids are as soon as the puppies are brought in. The kids scream "oooohhhhh sooooo cuuuuuttte" in ear-splitting shrieks and they bounce up and down and are just way too excited. I'm always amazed that this behaviour isn't addressed by the host or the breeders. It would be a great teaching tool and reach a wide audience.
I would think calm and gentle (especially when handling 4 week old puppies!)would be not only be obvious but expected.
Yes, have seen the show a few times. I so agree with the kid thing. I make all the kids sit on the floor with a blanket in their lap when they come to visit. They aren't allowed to pick them up either. Did you go to see Cesar when he was here? He talked about this exact thing just before he brought a couple of pups out on the stage. And what did the audience do? All OOOhhhs, and AWWeeeSSS ... he said, see what I mean?!!!!
I didn't get to see Cesar when he was here but I'd bet he would be on top of that. Too funny that the audience couldn't resist. Well, puppies are cute but still...
There's a new show now -- Dogs in the City -- just started two weeks ago. Kind of like the show Cesar had only it's an hour long and the dog trainer covers about three behaviour problems (different dogs). It's entertaining -- especially the clips between segments where they show the pampered New York pooches. Did you know they make strollers for dogs?! But it doesn't really show you much of the training techniques.
It's an American station...I get it on channel 13 with Rogers (I'm in Ottawa). Either CBS or ABC. 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. I'd be interested in knowing what you think about it. :-)
We, myself and my husband Michael share our lives with several shelties now. It has been a 24/7 labour of love for many years, however downsizing and switching gears has now come to pass.

What station is that one one?
Oh, yeah, knew about the strollers. They've been out for some time now.
