Ron Kolbus Cntr- Dog Obedience YEAR 21!

Another year ended with my dog obedience classes at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Center in Ottawa.  Great fun was had by all.

The Level 2/3 class is progressing very well as dog's are doing sit/down stays with their owners out of sight; heeling off leash; distracted recalls along with drop on recalls.

Level 1 students saw their abilities for over all control improve; we worked on sitting while being greeted and walking nicely on a lead.  We also found time for play sessions, which was especially good for the large breeds to learn how to play nice with the small breeds.  Little Chico taught the large breeds a lot!

Classes commence back for the 21st year, on January 14, 2015 for a full 10 week course.  You can check the info out at join.ottawa.ca.

Come out and teach your dog how to be a good neighbour, how to socialize with different breeds; learn how to maintain better control of your dog in all kinds of various situations; some health tips, like preventing snow balls in their feet in the coming months - oh joy! and if nothing more spending one on one time with your dog, indoors (in a safe environment) for one hour a week.  It may just be the work out you and your dog are looking for.

Parking is free! and so are the extra treats :)!

Shelamo BeDazzle - A New Forever Home

At the end of November this year, we placed the last of our sable breeding lines in a far away country - Spain!  It wasn't without a lot of paperwork through the vets & CFIA, airline planning, and overall timing to get her there, but we did it.

On November 28th, I flew with Dazzle from Ottawa, to Toronto; Toronto to Frankfurt, then on to Madrid.  From there the new owner picked me up and we had more than a 4 hour drive north to a small town, Salas, in the Province of Asturias.  I think Dazzle had more room to stretch out, and time to sleep than I did.  She arrived bright and alert and more than ready for her new adventure.

I traveled with only a carry on - went through 3 security checks - almost like disrobing each time, with the 3rd one in Frankfurt being patted down and having my hair gel taken away :(  Anyone that knows me, this was like having my arm cut off :)!  A lot of walking, especially through the Frankfurt airport.  Man that is a big place!

Frankfurt tunnel moving walk-way - and I'm only about 1/2 way through it!

We arrived on the Saturday afternoon, and on the Monday traveled about 2.5 hours to a dog show.  Here in Canada we'd call this a CKC Sanction Match (no points, a training ground for all)
line up for one of the groups - in Spain there are some differences, and in this group the Boxers are shown in breed by their colours
this breed is called the Spanish Alano
 Pastoral Group placements
Ana with her male sheltie, Pt JrCh PPW14 I’m Small Diamond Lohrien, came 2nd
the White German Shepherd was 3rd, a colour not approved in Canada

the Czech Wolf Dog, not seen here in Canada
and if it wasn't enough that Dazzle traveled all this way, she was also entered in the show!
Here she is at the end of the day, competing with Ana's boy in Brace competition.  Neither of them had ever been trained as a brace team ... and look at them showing together!  Dazzle never missed a beat.

On the Monday, Ana and her mother took me to Cudillaro, a quaint town on the Bay of Biscay, where I was bound and determined to touch the water!
Altho we had a high of 15C, it was overcast, drizzling at times, and certainly foggy in many areas of higher elevation during my stay.
 scenic town of Cudillero
 near Cudillero
the northern landscape reminded me of our Gatineau hills area, and the Madrid landscape very similar to our open field areas where there might be cow pastures, or corn/hay fields.
view of the Playa De San Lorenzo
this is what the beach would look like in the summer time!  I've seen pictures with even more people.
Gijon  - all made of wine bottles by the Playa De San Lorenzo
old part of Gijon - cobble stone like roads and all the lower windows had security bars on them
in Gijon by the port, a view of what would have been their fortress (best I can find dating back to the 15th century), it so reminded me of our Old Fort Henry in Kingston
Eligio del Horizonte--Praise of the Horizon--located at Cerro de Santa Catalina, sculpted by Eduardo Chillida from concrete in 1990.
Home from our tour on the Monday, I was 'screeched in', only in the Spanish way!  It's an apple wine, poured from the bottle into a wide glass at a distance, and you drink it in one go.  It was SO tasty, I asked for a second glass.

Ana's mom enjoyed the Ice Wine I brought.  We enjoyed the tastes that are special to each of us.

Tuesday, saw us traveling back to Madrid as I was leaving early on the Wednesday morning, traveling the same route back home.

It was certainly a fast trip, and bitter sweet.
Ana Busto (Astur Shelties), Dazzle & I the morning I left to head back to Madrid

We are hoping for the pitter patter of little paws come the new year ... Dazzle just did everything right, including coming into season while I was there!

We wish Ana the best of luck with Dazzle in not only producing pups that she can carry on with, but also as an agility star once (hopefully) motherhood is over with.

A Few More USA Championship points!

We are more than pleased with how our Shelamo Kenna is doing with Vicki Weis, and her capable handler/friend Karen Munster.  This is one of her recent wins, going Winners Female and Best Of Opposite.

This is a candid picture of Karen's husband Ed who had to step in to handle Brindy in the Best of Breed ring.  She just seems to be able to work with anyone!

So reminiscent of the temperament her great uncle BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector had.

At the same show Vicki's boy Walker, sire to our 2 biblack girls took the Breed.

Almost a Year Ago - An Awesome Birthday Present

Remembering, this past weekend BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector left his mark on our world, and through him, his daughter MBPIB Ch Shelamo Tyme Descends.

Little did I know how events would come full circle last year.

Back around 1980 my parents would travel to one of our local towns, Almonte, on their Honda Gold Wing 1000 and would visit the Dodd's antique shop.  Dad tried to buy an antique clock from Kevin, as a young boy, but no way!  Through the years they watched him come into his own as an acclaimed artist.

All of the personal stories mom and dad would tell, I really wasn't aware of the connection they had had with him for so many years.  Just knew who he was by some of the paintings we had at home, and the one my mom bought me years ago with a tri sheltie in it, called "Heading Home".

It was in the late fall of 2011 that I went with friends and my mom to a local Christmas Craft fair, and time was spent chatting with Kevin at his booth (mostly mom catching up on their lives).  There was a painting he had there that he indicated he was working on, and he wanted a moving sheltie in it.  Well ....little did he know then that he was talking to a breeder of shelties!  So I offered to find a few of my shelties on the move for him to work with.

After a long waiting period for me, he finished one of his more intricate paintings in the fall of 2013.

Mom and I met up with him at the Carp Fair in Sept 2013.  There he had the original painting!  It wasn't until this point that the connection of me (my business card had my married name) being the daughter set in.

What ended up happening ? ..... the original is now proudly displayed in our home.

This is picture he choose to use.

Grand Ch Shelamo Carbon Copy

We are thrilled to announce that a weekend ago we obtained the Canadian Kennel Club Grand Championship on our 11 month old Ch Shelamo Carbon Copy with a Select Bitch, a Best of Opposite and a Best Puppy In Group.

With the new rules this is the 1st dog we've had the opportunity to put this title on.  This is the 1st for her American sire, and 1st for her dam.

This past weekend we showed 2 days at SD&G down near Upper Canada Village, and added another Select and Best of Breed/Puppy Breed.

Her 'mom' Marylou showed her the first day at SD&G.

In the breed ring on last day.

We stopped at Upper Canada Village thinking we'd do photos but it was awfully hot/humid.  We did get a few shots of her, watching a flock of Canada Geese that decided to take flight.  Not an easy task trying to avoid what they'd left behind.

Shelamo's Party Pack ROMC - IN MEMORIAM

SHELAMO'S PARTY PACK ROMC
(May 21, 1998 - July 13, 2014)

It is with a heavy heart that we said good-bye to our dear "Opal" late Sunday evening.  She told it was time she crossed the bridge, so we peacefully helped her.

She was the foundation of most of our sable lines, producing either herself or through her kids many Best Puppy In Show winners, Reserve Best In Show winner, American Champion, class winner at the ASSA National, and many obedience and agility titled offspring.  She was our first Register of Merit Canadian, with 6 Canadian Champion offspring.  Maybe the best of all, is the pleasure her kids have given to our oh so many clients.

She was the best 'easy keeper' a breeder could have.  An easy whelper of 5-6 pups in each litter and the greatest of mothers.  She always wanted to please, even when the days came that her hearing went.

Mike and I will miss her wanting her bum rubs, her ears that never left the top of her head, and reminding us when cookies were due.

Many thanks to Amanda and Mark, and tech Ellen of the Mississippi Mills Animal Hospital for the 16+ years of excellent care they've given her.

Thank-you Mary Lou for helping me take these special pictures of her. And to Nancy (owner of an "Opal"grandson) for suggesting this lovely park in Ottawa to do the photo-shoot.
"Opal" in her later years found lots of time for sleeping on various beds
Food time you say?
"Rocky" and "Opal" as they enjoyed snoozing on the deck
~mother like son~

Am sure "Rocky" you were there to meet your mom and show her how much fun you continue to have

So this is where we part, My Friend,
And you'll run on, around the bend.
Gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on; I'll find the strength,
Life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
Share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
But they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
Will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
The fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
Take with you this...I loved you best.

-Jim Willis-

Happy 11th Birthday Ebony!

Today, a BPIS Am/Cdn Ch Shelamo's Prospector daughter turns 11!

Happy Birthday Ebony, Ebee, Ebnoneezer CGN ...... and to the great years you've given your owner Mary-Anne.

OH MY!!!  Had Mary-Anne only know when she walked out the door with Ebony and offered to help groom any time, what an impact she would have made on us and our kennel .... all the delivery nights, puppies she's socialized, dogs she's trained for the show ring (telling me I had to use a high show show voice!), helping at dog shows over the yrs, handling a Special's male at a DC&SSA in 2004 with laryngitis, and especially many Purina National Dog Shows, like this one in 2008!
and finishing our Rocky sister Ch Shelamo Show Case in 2005 when broke my foot.

The laughs we've had .... one only needed a Depends, just in case!

And what boss would understand 'I'm sick today as I'm helping deliver a litter of pups!'
